Aaltra

Aaltra (2004)
Starring: Gustave Kervern, Benoît Delphine

Aaltra is a brilliant, surreal and politically incorrect Belgian road movie. Ben Vives is a disgruntled commuter, more interested in professional motocross than in getting his lonely wife pregnant. Gus is a lazy farmhand. Both are stubborn, selfish, hopeless, petty, rude and barely likeable - and they also just happen to be next door neighbours, locked in a seemingly endless feud of minor disagreements and escalating mean-spiritedness. One day, when this causes Ben to lose his job and come back early to discover his wife in bed with another man. Furious, he drives up to the farm hand in the middle of a field and starts a fist fight which ends in the harvester. Ben and Gus wake up together at the hospital, both with useless legs. It seems they're doomed to stay together from now on ...

The Virgin Suicides

The Virgin Suicides (2000)
Starring: Kirsten Dunst, Josh Hartnett, Kathleen Turner, James Woods

"Obviously doctor, you have never been a thirteen year old girl."

Beautiful, mysterious, haunting, invariably fatal. Just like life. When I first saw this movie I was sixteen. It still is one of my favorits.

Gegen die wand

(I couldn't find a trailer with English subtitles)

Gegen die wand (2004)
International title: Head-On

"If you want to end your life, end it. You don't have to kill yourself to do that."

Starring: Birol Ünel, Sibel Kikilli

The best movie I have seen in years.

In 'Gegen die Wand' Cahit, a 40-something male from Mersin in Turkey has removed everything Turkish from his life. He has become an alcoholic drug addict and at the start of the movie wants to end it all. Sibel a 20-something female from Hamburg wishes to please her Turkish parents yet yearns for freedom.

Beautiful film week

Abby from Abby Try Again started the Beautiful Film Week idea January the 14th. I thought it was a great idea, but only now I have time to participate in it.

Here is number one:

Candy (2006)

"More is never enough."

"They say for every ten years you've been a junkie, you'll have spent seven of them waiting. On the one hand it was nice having all that time to think. On the other, anxiety was a full time job."

Starring: Abbie Cornish, Heath Ledger, Geoffrey Rush

A poet , Dan, and an art student, Candy, fall in love. They get caught up in a whirlwind of love, heroin and self-destruction.
A touching but harsh movie. A combination between 'Trainspotting' and 'Romeo + Juliet', and much more than that.

Elle Belgium, March 2007

Etsy seems to conquer Europe more and more.

In December 2006 I was interviewed for an article on Handmade and Etsy for Elle Belgium, that was published in the March volume of 2007, under the title 'Craftista's aan de macht', freely translated as Crafty chicks rule'.

Yesterday Etsy was mentioned in De Standaard, and today in Het Laatste Nieuws (both are flemish newspapers).
